Adjunct Faculty – World Languages (Spanish and German)
Adjunct postings are pool postings; when there is a need, divisions pull from applicants who have applied to this position. Teaching load is based upon student enrollment and staffing needs. The adjunct faculty appointment contains no guarantee of continued employment. Must reside in the (DC, VA, MD) DMV area.
Job DescriptionAdjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in the designated discipline to students from a variety of academic backgrounds. Teaching may include face‑to‑face, remote, and online formats. Adjunct faculty are employed to teach up to 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semesters and/or up to 8 credit hours during the summer session. Teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs.
Responsibilities- Teach specific classes in the designated discipline.
- Develop course syllabi and instructional materials.
- Maintain records, assign grades, and assess student progress.
- Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations of NOVA and the VCCS.
- Maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization.
Provide quality instruction, meet assigned classes regularly, submit required records and reports routinely, teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts, and adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations.
Special AssignmentsMay be required to perform other duties as assigned or to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA’s- Commitment to communicate in the target language 90% or more of the time during instruction.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and native or near‑native oral and written skills in the language of instruction.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Excellent oral/written communication skills and native or near‑native oral and written English skills.
- Ability to work with a diverse student population.
- Ability to use instructional technology.
- Master’s degree in the language of instruction or a master’s degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours of coursework in the language of instruction. Qualifying degrees and coursework must be awarded by and/or completed with a regionally accredited institution.
- A track record of effective community college or K‑12 teaching experience.
- Prior experience teaching in higher education.
- Experience with both on‑campus and online teaching.
- Experience teaching in classroom, hybrid, and online formats.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environment.
- Experience teaching students from diverse language backgrounds and varying levels of proficiency.
