Job Summary

This position supports students with special needs, accelerating English language acquisition and academic content learning in Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies across private day schools in Northern Virginia. The role focuses on providing instruction tailored to English learners (ELs), ensuring the acquisition of academic English skills needed to meet classroom expectations and to achieve passing scores on state assessments.

It also involves cross‑cultural guidance for students, serving as a liaison among ELs, classroom teachers, families, and the broader school community.

Principal or Department Supervisor. FLSA Status:
Non‑exempt;
Pay Level: Temporary.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Delivers rigorous and targeted instruction to English Learners (ELs) to accelerate their academic English and content‑area knowledge in alignment with the curriculum and ELD standards.
  • Provides sheltered instruction tailored to students’ designated English Language Proficiency levels.
  • Collaborates with private day school staff to co‑plan, co‑teach, and co‑assess as scheduling allows.
  • Monitors progress and promotes ELs’ participation in academic, social, and extracurricular activities.
  • Makes recommendations to instructional staff regarding accommodations, adaptations, and special resources for each EL.
  • Serves as the second language acquisition specialist for staff, maintaining a strong knowledge base of research, laws, and effective practices.
  • Acts as a liaison between ELs, their families, and the school, providing cross‑cultural information that fosters positive relationships.
  • Provides resources and guidance to staff on second language acquisition, sheltered instruction, and effective practices for teaching English learners.
  • Participates in division‑level professional learning required of all staff at the assigned grade level.
  • Participates in all required EL Program professional learning to stay current on procedures and requirements.
  • Collaborates in special education meetings where EL representation is required.
  • Maintains ongoing communication and engagement with EL families in comprehensible language.
  • Annually assesses all English Learners (ELs) in grades K–12 using the Virginia Department of Education approved assessment.
  • Implements all EL Program procedures as outlined in PWCS Regulation 600‑4 and related guidance documents.
  • Maintains required documentation for each EL within the Service Delivery Plan in the HUB student information system.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of second language acquisition and acculturation processes.
  • Knowledge of research, legal requirements, program models, and methodological approaches specific to multilingual learners.
  • Knowledge of techniques for teaching English, reading, and academic content to multilingual learners.
  • Knowledge of approved assessments used for program placement and monitoring of student achievement.
  • Knowledge of administrative procedures for implementing a formal EL program in compliance with all laws governing services for English Learners.
  • Native or near‑native proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in English.
  • Bilingualism in the language most represented by the students is an asset but not required unless the program model is bilingual.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with all school staff and provide professional learning as a specialist in second language acquisition.
Education Requirements
  • Minimum:
    Bachelor's Degree
Certification Requirements
  • Possession of a collegiate professional, postgraduate professional, or appropriate vocational certificate/license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with endorsement in ESL; eligibility for the Virginia State Certification Program is preferred.
Work Environment

The work is conducted in an indoor classroom or office setting. Employees may experience normal office conditions such as occasional noise, computer screens, and minor HVAC variations. Reasonable accommodations may be provided as necessary.
