Hiring Range: Per credit hour rate is determined based on experience and education

Full Time or Part Time: Part Time

Job Purpose

Help SVCC students build strong foundations in drawing, creativity, and visual expression. This is a UCGS transfer course designed to develop basic drawing skills and an understanding of visual language through studio instruction and lecture. The successful candidate must be committed to SVCC’s mission to provide high-quality education to the Southside Virginia community.

Course Content &

Specific Duties
  • Introduce and demonstrate concepts such as line, proportion, space, perspective, value, and composition.
  • Apply drawing concepts to subject matter including still life, landscape, and the figure.
  • Instruct students in the use of various media, such as pencil, charcoal, and ink wash.
  • Organize field trips and gallery assignments as appropriate to the curriculum.
  • Deliver instruction in a hybrid format, ensuring high-quality course materials align with college standards.
  • Maintain engagement through the college’s Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) for the online portion of the course.
  • Monitor and document class attendance in compliance with college policies, maintaining accurate records and communicating with students and necessary departments as needed to support academic success.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art
  • Clear demonstration of drawing skill adequate to teach this course
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal communication skills; ability to write syllabi and exams
  • Ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum, and assessments
  • Ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the community college and student success
Additional Considerations
  • Teaching experience at the college level, specifically with face-to-face and online/hybrid modalities.
  • Competency using instructional technologies such as SMART boards, Zoom and Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Experience working with community college students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and academic success.
