College Overview
Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC) is a two‑year public institution of higher education located in Alleghany. The college is supported by the Commonwealth of Virginia and serves the counties of Alleghany, Bath, Botetourt, and Rockbridge, as well as the cities of Buena Vista, Covington, and Lexington, and the town of Clifton Forge. MGCC provides credit and non‑credit courses that meet lifelong learning needs, offering on‑site and distance‑learning options that incorporate up‑to‑date technologies.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Travel to target schools, establish effective working relationships with students, school counselors, administrators, teachers, and staff; recruit and communicate regularly in person, in writing, and through technology.
- Plan and conduct regular group meetings for participants in grades 6‑12.
- Conduct workshops on study skills, career exploration, financial literacy, college exploration, and standardized testing.
- Assist students with the entire college application process, including receiving and assessing applications.
- Schedule group information sessions and individual appointments to help students and parents prepare financial aid applications and interpret financial aid offers.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of financial regulations and procedures.
- Contact colleges to arrange group and individual visits, coordinate transportation, and conduct tours.
- Arrange speakers, hospitality, fair sites, and transportation for student tours and presentations.
- Enter new student demographic information into the database and maintain educational history, financial status, and assessment forms for each participant.
- Keep counseling logs, group counseling reports, tutoring logs, and field‑trip records current; run reports as requested.
- Demonstrate a professional and cordial attitude in all interactions with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
- Participate in professional development opportunities.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's)/Required Qualifications- Knowledge of academic advising and college, career, financial aid, economic literacy activities, and related services.
- Ability to maintain a caseload of participants, provide services on their individual plans, and document services provided.
- Ability to use technology and online platforms and services.
Master’s degree preferred in education, counseling, social work, higher education administration, or a related field. Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience working for a TRIO federal program or a similar program serving low‑income and first‑generation college students (grades 6‑12). Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronted by program participants.
