Instructional Designer

Location: Fairfax County.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Telework: Yes, after one‑year probationary period.
Pay Range: $81,000 to $94,000.
Employee Must Reside In: Virginia.

Under the direction of the Director of Instructional Design and Development, this position provides instructional design expertise for NOVA Online (NOL). The Instructional Designer serves as part of the instructional design team, focusing on assisting faculty in the design of online courses and instructional practices, creation of online learning resources, and piloting/implementing new technologies for teaching and learning.

Duties and Tasks
  • Coordinate and manage course development and course revision projects from inception to completion.
  • Manage the course development process for new courses and courses that need to be revised/redesigned.
  • Provide instructional design consultation to individuals or groups of faculty on optimal design of online courses and effective use of multimedia for online instruction.
  • Provide leadership to faculty to design and develop high‑quality, contextually‑rich, engaging, and objective‑driven online courses.
  • Review existing courses for quality, currency, and consistency and work with faculty to enhance courses.
  • Mentor faculty as they revise/maintain existing courses.
  • Track status of projects and maintain appropriate files and records, including time tracking, project comments, and task completion.
  • Help to refine and improve the instructional design/development processes and procedures.
  • Design and produce learning materials in a variety of formats—including print, graphics, audio, video, web, and multimedia—to support teaching, learning, and college information needs.
  • Research and make recommendations on educational best practices, instructional resources, and instructional technologies to support teaching and learning.
  • Facilitate courses, workshops, and presentations to faculty and staff.
  • Participate in professional development to stay abreast of current research and best practices.
  • Participate in NOL staff meetings and  meetings.
  • Contribute to special projects as assigned to support the overall strategic mission of NOVA Online (NOL).
  • Supervise employees.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in instructional design, educational technology, or an appropriately qualifying field; coursework must be from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Experience in instructional design and designing online courses in a postsecondary setting or with/for a postsecondary institution.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral), interpersonal, and user‑support skills.
  • Outstanding organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, changing environment, both independently and with a team.
  • Ability to balance attention to detail, policies and procedures, consistency and logic with creativity, flexibility, and innovation.
  • Comfortable working in partnership with faculty and skilled at managing that partnership toward excellent course design outcomes.
  • Ability to deliver a positive customer‑service experience.
  • Knowledge of pedagogy and best practices in teaching and learning online.
  • Experience using a variety of technology tools to create multimedia content (e.g., Adobe Acrobat, Articulate, Camtasia, Captivate, podcasting tools, Google Apps).
  • Experience using the Canvas LMS to create, organize, and deploy instructional materials.
  • Experience creating content for faculty and working with SMEs and/or faculty, preferably in the higher education environment.
Additional Considerations
  • Doctorate in instructional design, educational technology, or related field awarded by a regionally accredited institution.
  • QM peer‑reviewer (PRC) certification.
  • Significant experience in coordinating and managing course development and course revision projects from inception to completion.
  • Experience in both education and corporate instructional design.
  • Expert level Canvas experience.
  • Experience teaching online.
  • Experience working in a community college.
