Job Title: Special Education Teacher
- Post High Exceptional Learners, Launch Program

Reports To: Mrs. Jennifer Matheny and Directors of Special Education (Augusta, Waynesboro, Staunton)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Teaches subjects focused on the post-secondary transition, provides IEP services to students with moderate to severe disability, and acts as an IEP case manager.

• Reliable attendance and prompt arrival time.
• Instruct students by lecturing, demonstrating, and using audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations.
• Prepare course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or state and school requirements.
• Assign lessons and correct homework.
• Administer tests to evaluate pupil progress, record results, and issue reports to inform parents of progress.
• Keep attendance records.
• Maintain discipline in classroom.
• Meet with parents to discuss student progress and problems.
• Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
• Perform related duties such as sponsoring activities or student organizations, assisting pupils in selecting course of study, and counseling students in adjustment and academic problems.
• Comply with school and school board policies and regulations.
• Demonstrate professional growth.
• Maintain prompt and accurate required records and reports.
• Use instructional and planning time effectively.
• Assume responsibility for care of materials, equipment, and facilities.
• Assume responsibility for a neat, safe environment for students under your care.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the subject being taught.
• Use out-of-class assignments, when appropriate, to support instructional objectives.
• Differentiate instruction to provide various learning experiences so all students can succeed.
• Assist with after school events as needed.
• Supervise students during class change, lunch duty, and after school events.
• Other duties assigned by Principal.

• Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area in which assigned.
• A healthy condition with no disqualifying physical or emotional handicaps; evidence of fitness to teach may be required.
• Teaching experience with an acceptable rating for such teaching.
• Bachelor’s degree (B.
  
  A.) from a four-year accredited college or university.
• Considered Highly Qualified: possess an active Virginia Teaching License with appropriate endorsement for the area(s) of teaching.

Demonstrates command of Standard English, both spoken and written. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals; write reports; effectively present information and respond to questions from teachers, parents, students, and the general public.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Regularly required to stand; occasionally required to walk, sit, reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear. Frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds. Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The work environment typically has moderate noise levels.

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on personnel evaluation.
