Join the Southside Virginia Community College faculty and teach REL 230 Religions of the World, a Passport and UCGS transfer course that introduces the five major world religions through a comparative and cultural lens. The successful candidate will design, deliver, and assess course content in a hybrid format and support student engagement using the Canvas learning management system and other technology tools.

Course Content &

Specific Duties
  • Introduce the major world religions:
    Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.
  • Focus on the origins, history, and basic beliefs of these faith traditions.
  • Instruct students on the values, ethics, and practices associated with each major religion.
  • Deliver instruction in a hybrid format, ensuring high-quality course materials align with college standards.
  • Maintain engagement through the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) for the online portion of the course.
  • Monitor and document class attendance in compliance with college policies, maintaining accurate records and communicating with students and necessary departments as needed to support academic success.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Religious Studies, Theology, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to write syllabi and exams and develop learning strategies, curriculum, and assessments.
  • Interpersonal communication skills; ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the community college and student success.
Additional Considerations
  • Teaching experience at the college level, specifically with face‑to‑face and online/hybrid modalities.
  • Competency using instructional technologies such as SMART boards, Zoom, and Canvas LMS.
  • Experience working with community college students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and academic success.
