The Elementary VALSS Tutor provides supplemental, high-impact tutoring to students identified as needing additional academic support in reading and/or mathematics through the Virginia ALL In Tutoring (VALSS) initiative. Tutors work with students individually or in small groups using evidence-based instructional strategies to accelerate learning and improve academic achievement. The tutor collaborates with classroom teachers and school administrators to support student growth while maintaining a positive, engaging, and supportive learning environment.

Responsibilities
  • Provide tutoring to elementary students in reading and/or mathematics.
  • Deliver instruction using division-approved curriculum and evidence-based instructional practices.
  • Work with individual students and small groups during the school day and/or after school as assigned.
  • Assist students in strengthening foundational academic skills.
  • Monitor student progress and maintain accurate tutoring records.
  • Communicate regularly with classroom teachers regarding student progress and instructional needs.
  • Encourage student engagement, confidence, and academic success.
  • Participate in required training and professional development related to the VALSS program.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA and school board policies.
  • Follow all division policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience working with elementary-age students preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, parents, and administrators.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of elementary reading and mathematics instruction.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students.
  • Effective classroom management and instructional support skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Basic computer skills, including Google Workspace and educational technology.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the school day.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to supervise students in a classroom setting.
