William & Mary Libraries support and enhance teaching and research while fostering intellectual curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning.
Join William & Mary Libraries as the Instruction and Research Librarian and contribute to designing and delivering dynamic teaching, learning, and research services at one of the nation’s premier universities. As part of a nine-member Research team, this role engages directly with faculty and students, providing instruction and one-on-one research support across disciplines.
Libraries
While the team functions as generalists, preference is given to candidates able to develop expertise in government and international relations. Training and support will be provided if needed.
This is an in-person, full-time, permanent position reporting to the Head of Research Services. Librarians at William & Mary are 12-month Professional Faculty (non-tenure track). The role evolves as library needs and technologies develop.

Key Responsibilities
35% – Information Literacy
- Participate in the information literacy program
- Teach library skills and deliver course-integrated instruction
- Design and teach workshops
- Create instructional materials (online and print)
- Provide research and reference assistance to faculty, staff, students, and community members
- Serve as a liaison to academic departments and campus groups
- Support collection development
- Collaborate on accreditation reports, curriculum development, and scholarly communications
- Promote data management services
- Develop initiatives in partnership with faculty and students
- Serve on university, library, and departmental committees
- Mentor student groups and participate in campus events
- Engage in professional growth
- Maintain awareness of best practices in research, teaching, engagement, and scholarly communications
Required Qualifications
- ALA-accredited master’s degree in library/information science (conferred by appointment date) or equivalent
- Experience providing instruction or research assistance in a library setting
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to work with diverse populations
- Understanding of trends and best practices in information literacy
- Willingness to develop expertise in government and international relations librarianship
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional experience in an academic library
- Background in teaching/research support related to government, political science, international relations, or related fields
- Demonstrated initiative in building faculty/student-centered programs
- Experience with partnerships and innovation in library services
- May require occasional evening, weekend, or holiday work
- On-site presence is required; telework possible once per week
- Visa sponsorship not available
- Background check required (may include criminal record, references, driving or financial history)
