William & Mary Libraries support and enhance teaching and research while fostering intellectual curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning.

Join William & Mary Libraries as the Instruction and Research Librarian and contribute to designing and delivering dynamic teaching, learning, and research services at one of the nation’s premier universities. As part of a nine-member Research team, this role engages directly with faculty and students, providing instruction and one-on-one research support across disciplines.

Libraries

While the team functions as generalists, preference is given to candidates able to develop expertise in government and international relations. Training and support will be provided if needed.

This is an in-person, full-time, permanent position reporting to the Head of Research Services. Librarians at William & Mary are 12-month Professional Faculty (non-tenure track). The role evolves as library needs and technologies develop.

35% – Information Literacy

  • Participate in the information literacy program
Libraries & Museums
  • Teach library skills and deliver course-integrated instruction
  • Design and teach workshops
  • Create instructional materials (online and print)
25% – Research Support
  • Provide research and reference assistance to faculty, staff, students, and community members
20% – Faculty Collaboration
  • Serve as a liaison to academic departments and campus groups
Social Sciences
  • Support collection development
  • Collaborate on accreditation reports, curriculum development, and scholarly communications
  • Promote data management services
Jobs
  • Develop initiatives in partnership with faculty and students
10% – Committee Service
  • Serve on university, library, and departmental committees
  • Mentor student groups and participate in campus events

Education



Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library/information science (conferred by appointment date) or equivalent
Academic Conferences & Publications
  • Experience providing instruction or research assistance in a library setting
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to work with diverse populations
  • Understanding of trends and best practices in information literacy
  • Willingness to develop expertise in government and international relations librarianship


Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience in an academic library
Colleges & Universities
  • Background in teaching/research support related to government, political science, international relations, or related fields
  • Demonstrated initiative in building faculty/student-centered programs
  • Experience with partnerships and innovation in library services
Conditions of Employment

  • May require occasional evening, weekend, or holiday work

  • On-site presence is required; telework possible once per week
