Position: Adjunct Sociology Faculty (Part-Time) - Introduction to Sociology

Overview

Adjunct Sociology Faculty (Part-Time) - Introduction to Sociology. This is a part-time faculty position with no state or VCCS benefits. Adjunct faculty are appointed on a course-by-course, semester basis as needed. Applications are accepted online, and should include a resume and all transcripts of college work completed.

Responsibilities
  • Introduce fundamental sociological concepts, principles, and theories.
  • Instruct students on sociological research methods and the impact of social inequality.
  • Examine topics including culture, race, social class, and gender.
  • Analyze major social institutions and their roles in contemporary society.
  • Discuss processes and impacts of social change.
  • Design and implement assignments that promote college-level reading, critical thinking, and clear, coherent written communication.
  • Utilize pre-developed assessments aligned with institutional learning outcomes and evaluate student work to support program and college-wide assessment.
  • Deliver instruction in a hybrid format, ensuring materials, activities, and assessments meet college standards for quality and rigor.
  • Maintain consistent student engagement through the college’s Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) for both in-person and online components.
  • Monitor and document class attendance in compliance with college policies and communicate with students and relevant departments as needed to support academic success.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Sociology from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal communication skills; ability to write syllabi and exams.
  • Ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum, and assessments.
  • Ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the community college and student success.
Additional Considerations
  • Teaching experience at the college level, including face-to-face and online/hybrid modalities.
  • Competency with instructional technologies such as SMART boards, Zoom, and Canvas LMS.
  • Experience working with community college students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and academic success.

Work Schedule:

Hybrid (a combination of in-person instruction on campus and online components). Location and times may vary. Example:
Christanna Campus — Alberta, VA;
Mondays, 1:00 PM – 2:25 PM (section details may apply).
