Sociology Adjunct; Fall

Duties and Tasks

• Teach specific classes in the designated discipline.
• Develop course syllabi and instructional materials.
• Maintain records, assign grades, and assess student progress.
• Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations of GCC and the VCCS.
• Maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization.

As a part of the primary responsibility to provide quality instruction, the College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; and adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

• Master’s Degree with at least eighteen graduate semester hours in Sociology.
• Ability to effectively teach classrooms and online.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Ability to use instructional technology.
• Experience with or willingness to learn artificial intelligence tools.

• Prior teaching experience.
• Work experience in the field.
• Experience with online teaching.
• Substantial, proven experience with innovative teaching and developing online courses in both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments at a regionally accredited institution.

Adjunct faculty are employed to teach up to 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semester and/or up to 8 credit hours during summer session. Teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs. The adjunct faculty contract contains no expectation or guarantee of continued employment. This wide salary range reflects the diverse faculty ranks within the Virginia Community College System.

Final salary determination and placement within this range are based on the candidate’s academic credentials and occupational experience as evaluated via the VCCS‑10 process.

Position located in Virginia. Must reside within a reasonable commuting distance or be willing to relocate to ensure consistent, reliable attendance. Hours will vary between 8:00 am and 10:00 pm depending on availability and scheduling needs.

Selected candidates must complete an extensive criminal background investigation, which may include fingerprint checks, local agency checks, employment verification, verification of education, credit checks, and other checks required by the VCCS such as I‑9 and E‑Verify requirements. In addition, candidates may be required to complete the Commonwealth’s Statement of Economic Interest.
