Alternative Education Teacher (Grades 6
8)

The Alternative Education Teacher provides academic instruction, behavioral support, and individualized interventions for students in grades 6 enrolled in the Alternative Education Program at Locust Grove Middle School. The teacher creates and maintains a structured, supportive learning environment that promotes student engagement, academic growth, positive behavior, and successful transition toward educational goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction and academic support to students in grades 6 within the Alternative Education Program.
  • Monitor and track student progress in online learning platforms and ensure students remain on pace with coursework.
  • Deliver individualized and small-group academic assistance to support student success.
  • Implement and maintain a structured classroom behavior management system that promotes accountability, consistency, and positive student outcomes.
  • Implement accommodations and modifications as outlined in students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Section 504 Plans.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of student academic performance, attendance, behavior, and interventions.
  • Collaborate regularly with general education teachers, special education teachers, school counselors, administrators, case managers, and other support staff to develop and implement student support plans.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student progress, behavior, attendance, and academic needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Valid Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement or eligibility for licensure.
  • Experience working with middle school students, particularly students with academic and behavioral challenges, is preferred.
