POSITION TYPE: Exempt

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Provide specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in accordance with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). Collaborate with general education teachers, administrators, related service providers, and families to ensure students access the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL), make meaningful educational progress, and participate in the least restrictive environment (LRE). Responsibilities include direct instruction, case management, assessment, progress monitoring, and compliance with federal and Virginia special education regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university;
  Master's degree preferred.
• Holds or is eligible for a Virginia Professional Teaching License with an endorsement in one of the following, as appropriate:
  • Special Education - General Curriculum K-12
• Knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504, and Virginia Regulations Governing Special Education Programs.
• Knowledge of Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) and evidence-based instructional practices.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and community agencies.
• Demonstrated proficiency with instructional technology and student data management systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction

• Plan and deliver specially designed instruction aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning and each student's IEP.
• Differentiate instruction to meet individual academic, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional needs.
• Provide instruction in resource, inclusion/co-teaching, and small-group settings as assigned.
• Utilize research-based instructional strategies and interventions.
• Implement accommodations and modifications identified in students' IEPs.
• Integrate assistive technology and specialized instructional materials when appropriate.

IEP Case Management

• Serve as case manager for assigned students.
• Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
• Schedule and facilitate annual review, eligibility, reevaluation, manifestation determination, and amendment meetings.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local timelines and documentation requirements.
• Maintain accurate and confidential student records.

Assessment and Progress Monitoring

• Administer formal and informal assessments.
• Collect and analyze student performance data.
• Monitor progress toward IEP goals and objectives.
• Prepare quarterly progress reports and communicate student achievement to families.
• Participate in eligibility and reevaluation processes.
• Collaborate with classroom teachers to provide inclusive educational opportunities.
• Consult with speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, behavior specialists, counselors, and administrators.
• Participate in Child Study, MTSS, and other multidisciplinary teams.
• Maintain regular communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress.

Classroom Management

• Establish and maintain a safe, structured, and positive learning environment.
• Implement Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) as appropriate.
• Teach and reinforce social, behavioral, and self-advocacy skills.

Compliance

• Maintain compliance with IDEA, Section 504, FERPA, Virginia Department of Education regulations, and School Board policies.
• Complete required reports and documentation accurately and within established timelines.
• Maintain confidentiality of student records and information.

Professional Responsibilities

• Attend faculty meetings, IEP meetings, professional development, and division training.
• Participate in school improvement initiatives and collaborative planning.
• Maintain professional licensure and complete required professional learning.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.
