Job Title: GO Fellow

Job Type: Ameri Corps

Location: State of Virginia

Start Date: Training begins on or about September 28th and in-person tutoring will begin on October 1st.

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

Job Summary

As an in‑person tutor with GO Tutor Corps, you will play a critical role in supporting students’ academic success by delivering targeted, small‑group instruction in Math and/or English Language Arts (ELA). In this 1,200‑hour Ameri Corps service position, you will support students in grades 3–12 during school hours (typically 8 am – 4 pm) for the academic semester.

Tutors are embedded in school communities and support instruction in alignment with each school’s model:

  • Support teachers within classrooms during small‑group rotations in math and literacy
  • Lead pull‑out small groups of 3–6 students focused on targeted instruction aligned to Standards of Learning (SOL) goals
  • Reinforce core instruction and support student progress on state assessments

In Arlington Schools, tutors provide small‑group academic support in designated intervention spaces and use school‑provided materials.

Across all sites, tutors collaborate closely with teachers and instructional coaches to align instruction with student needs and school priorities. Following training, tutors are expected to independently facilitate small‑group instruction, effectively use provided curricula, and maintain organized, engaging learning environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver Small‑Group Academic Instruction – Provide 90 minutes of tutoring weekly and use intervention curricula or provided instructional materials. Implement lesson plans with fidelity, prepare sessions in advance, and adjust pacing and strategies to meet varying student learning needs.
  • Support Student Academic Progress – Assess student understanding during sessions, track attendance and progress, and share updates with staff. Incorporate feedback from coaches, teachers, and site leads.
  • Build Positive Student Relationships – Establish a safe, inclusive learning environment, develop supportive relationships, and serve as a mentor and positive role model.
  • Maintain Program Expectations and Communication – Attend all assigned tutoring sessions, track attendance and dosage, monitor participation patterns, and communicate proactively with program staff. Arrive on time, fully prepared, and participate in required trainings and meetings.
  • Contribute to Enrichment and School Community – Support or co‑facilitate enrichment activities such as after‑school clubs, academic interventions, or school events.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of an associate’s degree or current enrollment in an accredited college or university program.
  • Citizenship or legal permanent residency in the United States (Ameri Corps requirement).
  • Served no more than three previous Ameri Corps service terms.
Competencies
  • Passion for service and a growth mindset.
  • Commitment to equity and diversity.
  • Belief that all students can succeed.
  • Confidence in leading students to significant academic growth in Math and/or ELA.
  • Experience in team settings, relationship building, and strong communication skills.
  • Professional maturity when working closely with peers.
  • Organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to respond well to feedback and demonstrate lifelong learning.
  • Collaborative problem‑solving abilities.
  • Prior experience working or volunteering with children (plus).
  • Able to travel to a GO partner school up to five days per week.
Living Allowance and Benefits

Ameri Corps living allowance:
Members who complete the 1,200‑hour term receive a pre‑tax living allowance of $24,000 for the full service year. The estimated bi‑weekly payment ranges from $1,000 to $1,100.

Additional benefits:
Ameri Corps Segal Education Award upon successful completion of up to $5,176.50; valuable professional and personal experience in public education, youth development, civic engagement, teamwork, and leadership.
