Job Description

Germanna Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. As a comprehensive community college, Germanna provides quality, accessible, and affordable educational opportunities for the residents of the City of Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, Culpeper, King George, Madison, Orange, Spotsylvania and Stafford.

The Career Advisor is embedded in Caroline High School and a Spotsylvania High School to assist students with post‑secondary career and educational planning. The position focuses on ensuring students leave high school with an academic and career plan and have taken appropriate steps to implement their plan. The Career Advisor works with high school students, parents, staff members and community members.

The Career Advisor supports a smooth transition from high school to post‑secondary education by assisting students in completing college, financial aid, and scholarship applications. During the Summer, the Career Advisor will provide transitional support to these graduating students enrolling at Germanna Community College.

Major

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implement outreach and career psycho educational counseling activities at both high schools
  • Maintain strategic relationships with high schools, and College staff and services
  • Maintain a case management system for recording and reporting on services
  • Promote career counseling and advising services to high school students, parents, school personnel, employers and the community
  • Provide wrap around services in the Summer to help students transition from high school to post‑secondary education
  • Coordinate on FAFSA completion events and assist students individually with FAFSA completion
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Experience providing career counseling to assist individuals in determining career and professional goals
  • Working knowledge of human growth and development theory and practice as they relate to adolescents and high school age students
  • Knowledge and experience in career counseling and educational pathway planning
  • Knowledge and experience with the use of career exploration and assessment tools in the process of counseling individuals related to career and educational goal setting
  • Evidence of ability to understand and interpret career assessments, test scores, college policies and academic placement procedures
  • Excellent public speaking, written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to problem‑solve in a fast‑paced environment with a large student population.
  • Ability to travel to area high schools to perform duties
  • Evidence of ability to appropriately handle confidential information
  • Evidence of ability to counsel and assist students with career and academic decision making
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with parents/guardians, school personnel, community representatives and employers
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate and timely record-keeping and reporting
Additional Considerations
  • Experience in community college/higher education setting
  • Experience providing college counseling, and academic assessment and career pathway planning in a high school setting
