Job Description General DescriptionThe primary responsibility of a faculty member at Northern Virginia Community College is to provide quality instruction for the learners in the didactic and clinical environments. The major emphasis is on excellent teaching by working with learners in classrooms, laboratories, individually, in simulations and in the clinical setting. Faculty help learners develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become better workers and better citizens.
Dutiesand Tasks
- Full-time teaching faculty in Respiratory Therapy are responsible for teaching various didactic and laboratory courses and be qualified to do clinical rotations with the learners in local hospitals and health care facilities.
- Courses are offered in traditional, hybrid formats and may offer distance learning opportunities.
- All faculty members must be available to teach day, evening and weekend classes.
- Faculty members also serve as faculty advisors, serve on division/campus/college committees, and participate in curriculum development and assessment. This appointment has a normal teaching load of 15 credits per semester.
- As a part of this primary responsibility, the College expects each faculty member to: meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; conduct requisite student conferences; hold required office hours; attend to assigned divisional and college duties; contribute to the development of the program of instruction; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college policies, procedures, and regulations;
answer emails in a responsible fashion; maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization; and advise students.
- The ability to effectively teach classroom, lab, and clinical components of Respiratory Therapy Program.
- Ability to use technology to enhance classroom instruction. Ability to use on-line resources and the current LMS.
- Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills.
- Teach material from approved curriculum in accordance with assigned schedule
- Be creative, innovative, and possess good problem-solving skills.
- Have good organizational skills and ability to complete assignments on time and accurately with minimal supervision.
- Must be proficient with MS Office, Power Point and using the Internet.
- Teach classroom, lab, and clinical components of Respiratory Therapy Program that include, but are not limited to: pharmacology, hemodynamics, respiratory physiology, respiratory mechanics, and pulmonary functions.
- Work collaboratively with fellow faculty to enrich faculty and student knowledge in the field of Respiratory Care which will foster growth toward future goals and objectives of the program and the college. This may be accomplished through meetings, conferences, and off campus activities after classroom/clinical hours.
- Obtain the appropriate certifications to teach with alternate formats, as required, i.e. hybrid and online.
- Be engaged in academia; including participation in graduation, recruitment events, promotional events, student life and interprofessional activities.
- Perform ongoing assessment of learners using formative and summative evaluation tools.
- Use input from course evaluations in addition to other tools to update courses to meet program and student learning outcomes.
- Seek high-quality best practices in instruction for the education of the Respiratory Therapy learners
- Model behaviors that encourage student success and retention.
- Provide and maintain reliable office hours for student advising, tutoring, remediation, and consultation.
- Mentor and/or orient new classroom and clinical faculty as assigned.
