General Definition of Work:
The EL Instructional Liaison plays an integral role in developing and implementing Albemarle County Public Schools’ language assistance program for English Language Learners. The EL Liaison coordinates a centralized registration process for international students at Albemarle County’s International Welcome Center and collaborates with administrators, teachers, and division-level staff to ensure all ESOL students are identified and placed in appropriate programs that provide equal opportunity for educational success across differences of language and culture.
The Liaison also manages the planning and administration of division and state-required assessments for EL students, including the provision of linguistic accommodations. Finally, the EL Instructional Liaison collaborates with division and school-level leadership to facilitate professional development on policy and best practices in curriculum, assessment, and instruction for linguistically and culturally diverse learners.
Essential Functions:
- Coordinates, assists in, and supervises the identification, assessment, and placement of international and ESOL students in Albemarle County Public Schools in collaboration with employees of the International Welcome Center;
- Schedules international, immigrant, refugee, and other-language-speaking K-12 students in appropriate language assistance programs based on intake assessments and family consultation;
- Evaluates international transcripts, assign credit for courses taken outside of the United States, and collaborate with guidance counselors to set up student schedules aligned with state graduation requirements;
- Creates Embassy Report Cards and Attendance Letters for international students returning to their home countries to ensure transferrable credits from the United States;
- Collaborates with division and school-level leadership to ensure adequate staffing and funding of language assistance programs in all Albemarle County Public Schools;
- Provides leadership and support in teacher professional learning communities (PLCs) around the instructional needs of linguistically diverse students, especially newly arrived students;
- Attends Student Based Intervention Team (SBIT) meetings for EL students to advise on effective progress monitoring and instructional supports;
- Attends regional and state meetings on best practices and changing policies around language assistance programs for EL students to share these policies and practices with school personnel through a variety of means, including in-services, professional development, webinars, and PLC meetings;
