To serve as the Central Office safety coordinator to their assigned Districts. This position will be required to coordinate, collaborate, and drive consistently in the implementation of the agency’s safety and health efforts and support the District Safety Managers in the execution of the VDOT Safety program.
How you will contribute:- Provide Safety Guidance:
Resource for District Safety Managers to ensure consistent application of VDOT policies, procedures and guidelines. Interpret trends, as reflected in safety metrics, to identify areas needing improvement and recommend solutions. Provide safety consultation, guidance and technical assistance to District Safety Managers. Provide unique, timely solutions to field operational safety issues. - Safety Program Oversight:
Provide strategic oversight of VDOT safety and health policies, procedures and guidelines when implemented at the District level. Interpret and analyze pertinent policies and procedures to provide consistency in field implementation. Serve as a subject matter expert and technical liaison for the Office of Safety, Security and Emergeny Management at the District level. Recommend additional safety stragies and training to reduce employees exposure to hazards, recommends delivery methods and provides follow through to implementation.
Support the safety communication plan providing and reviewing timely safety topics to be presented consistent with the communication mode. - Safety Program Resource Assistance:
Provide additional safety resources in the field to support the District’s efforts and assist the District Safety Managers during leave (sick, vacation, etc.) and during emergency operations.
- Ability to adapt to changing work demands and environments.
- Ability to analyze data and prepare technical reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with diverse audiences, make presentations and conduct meetings.
- Ability to evaluate and determine alternatives to problems that are not well defined and in a dynamic state of change.
- Ability to interpret and apply codes, laws, standards, policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Ability to maintain and work with confidential information.
- Ability to travel extensively in the assigned geographical area.
- Ability to work effectively with all levels of employees, management and the public.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize assignments in accordance with objectives and within establish deadlines.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local regulations regarding workplace safety.
- Knowledge of occupational safety and health standards, industrial hygiene fundamentals, and safety equipment.
- Skilled in the use of computers and software applications.
- A general knowledge of equipment and materials used in roadway construction or maintenance
- Ability to adapt to changing work demands and the ability to solve complex problems using analytical thinking.
- Ability to plan and implement work assignments.
- Ability to travel extensively in the assigned geographical area.
- Ability to work effectively with all levels of employees, management and the public.
- Experience applying industrial and motor vehicle investigation techniques.
- Experience interpreting and applying codes, laws, standards, policies and procedures related to safety.
- Knowledge of occupational safety and health standards, industrial hygiene fundamentals, and safety equipment in Construction, General Industry, and Maritime applications.
- Skilled in the use of computers and software applications.
- Valid driver's license.
- A combination of training, experience, or education in Occupational Safety, Health or related field desired.
- Ability to gather information, analyze data and prepare technical reports.
- Experience pertaining to safety data research and evaluation in a large organization or state agency. Prefer experience with Safety and Health practices and technology solutions.
- Experience working in a safety and health related occupation.
- Knowledge of training principles and abilities to create and present training courses.
- Skill technical writing and public speaking.
