Acoustic Engineer / Principal Engineer
Department of Public Works – Prince William County

Prince William County’s Department of Public Works is seeking a qualified Acoustic Engineer to support the enforcement and development of the County’s Noise Ordinance. This position plays a critical role in protecting public health, safety, and quality of life by managing environmental noise impacts across industrial, commercial, and residential areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct sound level measurements, noise monitoring, field inspections, and investigations related to noise complaints and ordinance violations.
  • Analyze acoustic data and prepare clear, defensible technical reports and enforcement documentation.
  • Review development, construction, rezoning, proffer, and special use permit submissions for compliance with noise regulations and mitigation requirements.
  • Issue violation notices, document inspections, collect and preserve evidence, and enter investigative findings into databases.
  • Maintain and calibrate Class 1 sound measurement equipment in accordance with professional standards.
  • Provide expert testimony and technical support for administrative hearings and court proceedings.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement, planning staff, and other agencies on noise management initiatives.
  • Educate residents, businesses, and developers on compliance and noise mitigation strategies.
Qualifications
  • Education and experience in engineering with an emphasis on acoustics.
  • Experience collecting sound measurements, performing acoustic analysis, and applying noise control principles.
  • Knowledge of sound measurement standards, noise propagation, rules of evidence, and enforcement procedures.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills with the ability to translate complex data into clear reports.
  • Proficiency with common computer applications (e.g., MS Teams, Word, Outlook).
  • Excellent time management skills and attention to detail.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Deputy Director of Public Works. This position may be filled as an underfill at the Senior Engineer (C43) or Engineer (C42) level, based on qualifications.
