Overview
Prince William County’s Building Development Division is seeking a full‑time Special Inspections Engineer to support residential and commercial construction projects with significant structural engineering components. The position involves both field and office work, reviewing drawings and engineering reports, coordinating with stakeholders, and performing on‑site quality assurance inspections to ensure code compliance and public safety.
Responsibilities- Review construction drawings and engineering reports for structural work.
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with building codes and county procedures.
- Conduct field inspections of active construction sites to verify work is progressing according to approved plans and standards.
- Maintain clear, effective communication with contractors, engineers, and third‑party inspectors.
- Prepare and maintain inspection reports and records.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
- 1 year of relevant experience as a design professional, construction inspector, plan reviewer, or code enforcement inspector.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office; experience with structural and geotechnical engineering software and CAD is desirable.
- Experience applying code knowledge for quality control reviews.
- Experience scheduling maintenance and inspections prior to building inspections.
- Must become an Engineer in Training (E.I.T.) within 18 months of employment.
- Must become a Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development Commercial Building Inspector within 18 months of employment.
- Must become a Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development Residential Building Inspector within 36 months of employment.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and pass a DMV records check.
Standard Monday‑Friday schedule, 37.5 hours per week. Telework is allowed 1–2 days per week after a 6‑month probationary period.
Compensation and Benefits- Hired salary range: $74,217 – $82,000.
