Engineering Technician II – Solid Waste Management Program
The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) seeks an experienced Engineering Technician II to provide technical support for the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of environmental infrastructure at the I‑95 and I‑66 landfills. Responsibilities include leachate pumping, landfill gas and stormwater management, equipment troubleshooting, data analysis, and preparation of reports and cost estimates.
Key Responsibilities- Operate small construction equipment (skid steer, forklift) and monitor leachate pumping and gas systems.
- Interpret maps, engineering plans, and construction drawings to verify compliance.
- Gather, analyze, and report monitoring data; generate system and asset reports.
- Maintain files and records to support environmental compliance.
- Perform simple calculations for material quantities, costs, and equipment life‑cycle.
- Research new equipment and prepare cost and quantity estimates.
- Assist in plan review, inspection, and quality control of contractor work.
- Construct and maintain stormwater, erosion, and sediment control systems.
- Prepare preliminary engineering work, including check sheets and preliminary plans.
- Respond to inquiries and complaints from citizens; explain engineering solutions.
- High school graduation or GED plus three years of engineering technical support experience.
- Working knowledge of engineering science, arithmetic, and applicable laws and regulations.
- Ability to use measuring equipment, software, and basic drafting skills.
- Strong problem‑solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Class II Waste Management Facilities Operator’s License (training required within 18 months).
- OSHA‑Approved Confined Space Training – 16‑hour course (within 6 months).
- At least five years of experience in construction, operation, and maintenance of landfill infrastructure.
- Five years of experience with landfill systems or mechanical aptitude.
- Two years of experience maintaining and monitoring gas wells.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.; crawl, stoop, bend, and work in confined spaces; operate vehicles; work outdoors in adverse weather; tolerate exposure to raw waste; perform repetitive hand and arm motions.
Selection ProcedurePanel interview and may include an exercise.
