An Associate GIS Designer at HBK Engineering is a position that works closely with project teams consisting of engineers, designers, and field personnel involved in the design, modification, analysis, and constructability of new and existing projects. This role involves working with data sets, CAD conversions, map creations, and data management for GIS mapping projects while producing and updating overlay maps to show information boundaries, utility locations, and topographic features.
The position provides hands‑on experience with GIS technology and mapping systems while offering light mentorship opportunities to junior staff.
Working location:
Springfield, VA
- Work closely with project teams consisting of engineers, designers, and field personnel on design, modification, analysis, and constructability of projects
- Work with data sets, CAD conversions, map creations, and data management for GIS mapping projects
- Produce and update overlay maps to show information boundaries, utility locations, and topographic features on various base maps or at different scales
- Determine scales, line sizes, and colors to be used for hard copies of computerized maps using plotters
- Identify and compile database information to create maps in response to client and project requests
- Work with aerial photographs to identify topographical features for mapping accuracy
- Enter GPS data, legal deeds, field notes, and land survey reports into GIS workstations to transform information into graphic land descriptions such as maps or drawings
- Compile and digitize electric utility construction as‑builts and other technical documents
- Calculate latitudes, longitudes, angles, areas, and other information for mapmaking using survey field notes or reference tables
- Check all layers of maps to ensure accuracy, identifying and marking errors and making necessary corrections
- Perform light mentorship to GIS Technician I staff members
- Perform or assist with basic field data collection as needed
- Move about on construction work sites, public streets, and parkways safely for field data collection.
- High school diploma or GED certificate
- Formal survey training preferred, but not required
- 2+ years of relevant experience
- Valid driver’s license (CDL not required)
- Self‑motivated and proactive attitude with good interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to effectively communicate with diverse teams and stakeholders
- Ability to perform outdoor standing and/or walking work every day
- Physical capability to move about on construction work sites, public streets, and parkways
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
