South Hill, VA (on-site; 50% office / 50% field)
Compensation: $85,000–$125,000 base (depending on experience/interview)
Schedule:
Monday–Friday, around 7:00am–3:00pm for field support; office hours are flexible. Workload fluctuates with construction (average 40–50 hours/week).
We are hiring a Commissioning Engineer to support multiple active projects with additional work ramping up later this year. This role focuses on final testing, startup, commissioning, analysis, and troubleshooting of low- and medium-voltage electrical distribution equipment in both field and manufacturing environments. Travel may be required (local/regional/national based on project needs).
What you’ll do- Perform final testing, startup, and commissioning of electrical distribution equipment (breakers, transformers, switches, switch gear, relays, MCCs, UPS, power monitoring systems, etc.)
- Execute testing, analysis, and troubleshooting to validate equipment/system performance and fail-safe operation
- Support commissioning documentation and deliverables (simple electrical sketches, commissioning plans, data sheets)
- Perform routine electrical calculations and assist with review of supplier documentation for spec compliance
- Follow engineering standards, guidelines, and applicable codes
- Produce clear technical documentation and reports
- Communicate effectively with field teams and internal project stakeholders to support safe, successful execution
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or closely related engineering discipline)
- 1+ year of relevant experience (commissioning, electrical testing, power systems, manufacturing test, field start-up, or similar)
- Familiarity with power systems equipment (switch gear, transformers, breakers, protective relays, panels, UPS, test equipment)
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills
- Working knowledge of industry codes/standards and basic electrical engineering theory
- Willingness to travel to customer/project sites as needed
- Ability to work at a computer for extended periods
- Ability to sit for extended periods and perform frequent hand/finger dexterity tasks (keyboard/mouse)
- Ability to communicate clearly (verbal and written) and interpret technical information
- Experience supporting data center, industrial, utility, or electrical manufacturing environments
- Combination of field commissioning exposure and office-based engineering/documentation work
