Lieutenant

This is a sworn, professional position. The incumbent performs difficult and complex work in supervising a departmental unit or in performing advanced management and technical work of comparable responsibility.

• Each sworn officer at Pamunkey Regional Jail must maintain the ability to perform the essential job functions of a sworn law enforcement officer as described under the “Jail Officer” job description, regardless of their current assignment.
• Supervisesemployees,performingrelatedhumanresourcesfunctionsandcompletingnecessarypaperwork.
• Overseesthecoordinationofdailydutiesofallswornofficers/civilianpersonnelperunderhis/hercommand.
• Participatesinthedivisionbudgetpreparation.
• Assumescommandinemergency situations.
• Actsastheliaisonbetweenappropriateofficialsand counterparts.
• Investigatecomplaintsorgrievancesfrominmatesorsubordinatesusingtheappropriatechannels.
• Ensureslivingconditions,cells,andhousingunitsarecleanand orderly.
• Ensuretheinmatesreceivetheappropriatenutritionand hygiene.
• Reviewandverifyinmateshavefulfilledtheircourtorderedsentencepriortobeingreleased.
• Ensureinmatebehavioriswithinthefacilitypolicyandprocedures.
• Coordinatesallnecessaryin-serviceandrecertificationtrainingforall personnel.
• Overseestheoperationofa Jail Basic Training Academyfornewemployees .
• Overseesinmatevisitationasaccordingtopolicy.
• Supervisesinmateprogramstoensuretheinmateshaveaccesstovariousprograms.
• Overseesinmaterecordsandsentencesarecalculatedandenteredcorrectly.
• Ensures inmates areproperlyclassifiedandhousedthroughoutthefacility.
• Ensures inmates aretransportedtotheirscheduledcourt date,medicalappointments,etc.
• Overseesauthorizedinmatestoworkoutinthecommunityandonthefacilitygrounds.
• Ensures all of the incoming mail is processed and delivered to the inmates on a daily basis.

Must be 21 (twenty one) years of age, High School diploma. College level course in corrections or criminal justice and a minimum of three years’ experience at the level of corrections sergeant, required. Any combination of education, experience and training to demonstrate the ability to perform the functions of the position may be acceptable.
