Introduction Prince William Fire & Rescue System is the Commonwealth’s second-largest fire and rescue organization, offering a tremendous opportunity to serve within a diverse, fast-paced, and evolving public safety system. We are a growing organization of over 800 uniformed and professional (civilian) employees supporting operations across 348 square miles and 22 strategically located fire stations throughout the county. The Department of Fire and Rescue is seeking a skilled and objective professional to join our Personnel Section as a temporary Workplace Investigator
. This critical role ensures the integrity of our internal operations by conducting thorough, impartial fact-finding investigations into workplace matters. As an Investigator, you will serve as a neutral party, establishing the factual record that empowers our leadership to make fair, informed decisions regarding policy, discipline, and performance. Your work will directly support the Department’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and professional standards.
This Role
As a Workplace Investigator, you will be responsible for the mechanical execution of complex internal administrative investigations. You will work in close partnership with a designated Subject Matter Expert (Chief Officer), focusing strictly on the investigative process—gathering evidence, conducting formal interviews, and documenting facts—without the burden of policy interpretation or final adjudication.
Key Responsibilities- Conducting impartial interviews with complainants, witnesses, and employees to gather accurate statements.
- Collaborating with Chief Officers to define the scope of inquiries and ensure all relevant leads are pursued.
- Analyzing evidence to create clear, chronological, and fact-based reports that serve as the foundation for departmental decisions.
- Maintaining strict confidentiality and integrity of all investigative files and recordings.

Minimum Requirements- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- 5 years of experience in conducting internal affairs or workplace investigations.
- Experience conducting internal affairs or human resources investigations within a public sector or public safety environment.
- Experience working in public safety.
- Certification in internal investigations or interview techniques (e.g., Wicklander-Zulawski, Reid, etc.).
- Demonstrated ability to write comprehensive, objective investigative reports.
Background checks, which may include but are not limited to:
Criminal History Check, Credit History Check, Education Verification Check, License Verification Check, and/or fingerprinting may be required as posted in the job advertisement. Fire & Rescue Requirement:
Effective October 2012, mandated by the Virginia State Board of Health 12
VAC5-31-540, VA EMS Regulations require a criminal background check conducted by the Central Crime Records Exchange and the National Crime Information Center via Virginia State Police; and a driving record transcript from the individual’s state Department of Motor Vehicles.
This is a temporary position with a flexible schedule, based primarily out of Manassas Park, and requires the ability to travel within the county as caseload and departmental needs dictate. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required to accommodate interview schedules.

This is a telework-eligible role that may revert to in-office scheduling if business needs change.
$50.00-$60.00 per hour.
