Overview
Prince William County’s Department of Development Services is seeking qualified applicants for the Senior Building Code Compliance Inspector position. The Building Code Compliance Branch seeks a highly motivated, high-performing individual to enforce the Uniform Statewide Building Code, provide education and service to customers, and play an essential "first preventer" role. This position offers paid training and County-sponsored educational opportunities.
Responsibilities- Perform code enforcement, commercial, and residential inspections.
- Conduct thorough background research and investigations of received complaints.
- Provide guidance and education outreach to the public and internal stakeholders.
- Work with the Commonwealth Attorney and testify in court.
- High school diploma or G.E.D. and 3 years of related experience.
- 5 years of experience in code enforcement, inspections, or a similar construction-related field.
- 2 years of experience with law enforcement or working with legal documents and court testimony.
- Familiarity with the enforcement of applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
- Experience receiving and processing complaints and inquiries from the public and internal entities regarding building or construction regulations.
- Experience conducting field inspections.
- Knowledge of the legal system, case preparation, and court testimony.
This position works a standard Monday‑Friday schedule, 37.5 hours per week. The role is telework‑eligible and may revert to in‑office scheduling if business needs change. Employees may telework 1–2 days per week after an initial probationary period or when agreed upon with the supervisor and approved by the branch manager.
Special Requirements- Valid driver’s license – successful completion of a DMV Check.
- Pre‑employment physical.
- Must become certified as a technical assistant to the Building Official.
- Must obtain residential and commercial building inspection certification within 18 months.
- Must obtain residential combination (electrical, plumbing, mechanical) inspection certification within 36 months.
- Must obtain property maintenance inspector certification.
