Personnel Bureau Background Investigator

he Prince William County Police Department is recruiting for the position of Background Investigator
. Officers interested in applying must submit their application with endorsements by the closing date advertised.

• Completes thorough and timely background investigations for police officer and county agency positions.
• Conducts in-depth interviews with applicants and their associated references
• Organizes/schedules applicant testing.
• Evaluates an applicant’s criminal history, credit report, traffic record, polygraph results, and applicant answers provided in a personal history statement.
• Prepares a comprehensive background report that includes all references, testing results, and developed conclusions of the applicant’s capability.
• Capable of supporting with developed data why an applicant is either suitable or not suitable for the applied position.
• Ability to collaborate with fellow background investigations.
• Ability to develop independent investigative leads
• Assists with the recruiting of potential applicants

3 Years (

* 1) one-year extensions may be granted, with the approval of the Chief of Police, through memorandum request.

Police Officer/Detective PD01 and Master Police Officer PD02. Must not be on probation as of the closing date.

C.I.D. investigative experience and/or training, but not a mandatory prerequisite for application.

Strong written and oral communication skills. General knowledge of the County’s Equal Employment Opportunity and Aff… in addition to the above, the successful candidate will be selected based on such factors as performance evaluations, supervisor recommendations, training, experience, and demonstrated interest. Seniority will also be considered. Candidates should outline their qualifications in their written memo request for endorsements. Please list training and work experience.

Interviews will be conducted with the candidates. The purpose of the interview is to permit the candidates to speak of their qualifications and interest in the position.
