Lead the strategies that will shape the future of one of Virginia’s largest and fastest-growing communities. Prince William County is seeking an accomplished, strategic, and collaborative executive to serve as its next Deputy County Executive for Mobility, Economic Growth & Resiliency.
Reporting directly to the County Executive, this enterprise-level leader will oversee a portfolio spanning economic development and tourism, planning, transportation and capital construction, public works, and development services. The position sits at the intersection of some of the County’s most consequential priorities – including growth, economic competitiveness, mobility, infrastructure investment, resiliency, and long-term quality of life.
Located just over 20 miles from Washington, DC, Prince William County is Virginia's second-largest county, with approximately 508,000 residents and more than 10,000 businesses. The County is projected to reach approximately 520,000 residents by 2030. With a diverse, growing economy, nearly 6,000 County employees, and a FY26 General Fund of nearly $2 billion, Prince William County is focused on smart growth, mobility, economic development, service delivery, and long-term community sustainability.
Aboutthe Role
The Deputy County Executive will serve as a key member of the County’s executive leadership team and will lead at the intersection of economic development, growth, land use, transportation, infrastructure, and community resiliency.
Responsibilities- Provide executive leadership and administrative oversight to assigned departments and agency directors
- Advise the County Executive on economic development, land use, transportation, infrastructure, development services, environmental resiliency, and related policy matters
- Translate Board of County Supervisors and County Executive priorities into coordinated strategies, implementation plans, and measurable outcomes
- Lead complex, cross-departmental initiatives that require collaboration across organizational boundaries
- Integrate economic development, transportation, infrastructure, land-use planning, and development policies to advance long-term strategic objectives
- Identify opportunities to expand and diversify the commercial tax base and strengthen economic competitiveness
- Promote predictable, transparent, customer-focused development processes
- Build strong relationships with elected officials, regional and state partners, businesses, educational institutions, developers, community organizations, and residents
- Use data and performance measures to evaluate outcomes, improve services, and drive decision-making
- Develop and mentor executive leaders while fostering collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement
The successful candidate will bring:
- Significant progressively responsible executive or senior management experience in a large local government, public agency, regional organization, or comparably complex organization
- Demonstrated experience working directly with elected officials and leading multiple departments, major organizational functions, or complex cross-functional initiatives
- Enterprise leadership and the ability to lead beyond departmental silos
- Strategic and systems thinking across land use, transportation, infrastructure, economic development, fiscal sustainability, resiliency, and quality of life
- A record of successfully leading senior professionals and executives
- Economic and community development acumen, including an understanding of private investment, commercial development, job creation, redevelopment, and placemaking
- Strong political and organizational acumen and the ability to work effectively with elected officials and diverse stakeholders
- Exceptional collaboration, relationship-building, written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- A commitment to innovation, data-informed decision-making, execution, and accountability
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in public administration, business administration, planning, economics, engineering, transportation, public policy, or a related field is expected.
- A master’s degree in public administration, business administration, planning, public policy, or a related discipline is highly desirable.
$265,000 – $275,000 annually
