Overview

These roles provide direct patient care under the supervision of Registered Nurses or other Medical Professionals. They primarily assist patients with activities of daily living while monitoring vital signs and reporting any changes in patient condition. They help maintain a safe and clean environment for patients.

These roles perform a variety of tasks, such as taking patient histories, measuring and monitoring vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, and assisting with minor procedures. Individual contributors work under supervision with responsibilities in a clinical discipline or specialty. Opportunities for progression outside this career stream are typically limited without additional education or training. A specialty license or certification may be required, acquired through training or experience.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care under supervision of RNs or other medical professionals.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living and monitor vital signs; report changes in condition.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment for patients.
  • Take patient histories, prepare patients for examinations, and assist with minor procedures.
  • Deliver support services or activities under supervision in a clinical discipline or specialty.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School Graduate or Equivalent
  • Experience:

    No experience required
  • Licensure:
    American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS Certification required
  • Certified to practice as a Nurse Aide in the Commonwealth of Virginia OR
    • Successful completion of the UVa PCT Education Program OR Successful completion of another PCT Education Program approved by NPDS
    • Documented proof of at least 1 year of recent (within past 2 years) experience in a similar PCT role from an outside institution; candidate must complete a written exam and demonstrate clinical skills during a 6 month probationary period
    • Passage of a nationally recognized and accredited PCT Certification exam (e.g., National Health career Association - C-PCT) with certificate presented as verification
    • Currently enrolled student nurses who have completed the Medical/Surgical Clinical Experience and Didactic are exempt from the Certified Nurse Aide requirement
    • EMT or higher certification; candidate will complete the UVA PCT Course within a 6 month probationary period
    • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
Physical Demands

Job requires frequent bending/stooping and driving (Home Health Aide only). Proficient communication, auditory and visual skills; attention to detail and legibility in writing; ability to lift/push/pull 20–50 lbs and >100 lbs (Home Health Aide only). May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids, and infectious disease.

The starting base rate for this role is $15.37 hourly. Compensation is determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, experience, and education.
