We are looking for the next Director of Communications for a growth-stage defense technology company delivering advanced software and data capabilities to support national security and government. Reporting to the VP of Communications, you'll lead the strategy and execution of external communications efforts that strengthen market visibility, shape industry narrative, and amplify executive voice to support business growth. Top candidates possess deep familiarity with the defense and national security ecosystem, exceptional writing and storytelling ability, and a demonstrated track record of building meaningful media presence through modern digital channels.
Location:
5 days in the firm’s Arlington, VA office. Non-local candidates will not be considered.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive external communications strategy aligned to company growth objectives
- Drive proactive media engagement to increase visibility across defense, technology, and national security outlets
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear, compelling narratives tailored to policymakers, operators, and industry stakeholders
- Partner closely with senior executives to craft speeches, contributed articles, briefing materials, and other thought leadership content
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key journalists and editors, coordinating outreach efforts as needed
- Provide strategic direction for social media messaging and audience engagement
- Establish messaging frameworks that clearly differentiate the company within the defense technology landscape
- Manage editorial planning and ensure consistent, high-quality content output across channels
- 7+ years of experience leading strategic communications initiatives with measurable results
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills across multiple formats and platforms
- Strong understanding of the U.S. defense and national security environment
- Experience advising senior executives on external positioning and public engagement
- Demonstrated success building media relationships and securing impactful coverage
- Familiarity with digital publishing strategies and audience growth tactics
- Ability to operate at both the strategic level and in hands-on execution
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
- Experience in a high-growth technology or venture-backed environment
- Background managing public relations agencies or external communications partners
- Prior experience supporting companies operating in regulated or government-focused markets
