MPS, a division of Macmillan Publishers, a leading U.S. publisher of trade and academic titles, is hiring a Computer Operator at its Gordonsville facility. The role provides back‑office support, warehousing, and fulfillment for Macmillan U.S., serving as the primary distribution center for North America.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for all aspects of computer operations on assigned shifts, reviewing documentation for clarity and accuracy, ensuring adherence to operational and help‑desk procedures, and coordinating with technical and programming staff to enable smooth workflow for job turnovers and related documentation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Monitors and assists with shift processing and distribution of output in compliance with schedule or requests. Assists with the security of production programs and files to prevent unauthorized access. Keeps track of data‑center equipment inventory and locations.
  • Seeks to ensure quality operations by developing techniques to increase productivity and create smooth workflow. Ensures that all data‑center equipment is in good operational order and condition.
  • Enforces operational procedures and proper documentation. Follows shift‑turnover procedures. Completes all data‑entry tasks accurately and timely.
  • Supports staff when troubleshooting problems. Communicates regularly with users regarding operational requests or job status. Provides quality customer‑oriented data services to the IT user community; follows guidelines set by IT management.
  • Maintains familiarity with all aspects of computer operations for every shift, prepared to cover for operations and help‑desk staff as needed. Provides feedback to the VP of Information Technology, other IT staff, and New York personnel about abnormal types or volumes of help‑desk calls and operational problems.
  • Enforces safety, health, and housekeeping policies and procedures to minimize injuries, loss of production time, and damage. Conforms to all company policies and environmental, health, and safety requirements.
  • Coordinates with technical and programming staff for production turnover of jobs, ensuring accurate documentation and restart procedures. Updates operation procedures and manuals. Maintains on‑site and off‑site tape libraries.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

High‑school diploma or equivalent; and one to three years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as computer run sheets, technical testing procedures, technical documentation manuals; to write routine reports and correspondence; and to communicate effectively with employees, management, and vendors.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, and percent.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense to carry out written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions. Must be able to make decisions within training scope during downtime, in crisis mode, or while troubleshooting; if a problem falls outside training, call appropriate personnel for assistance.
