NGEN is the largest IT services program for the Navy. Under the Service Management, Integration, and Transport (SMIT) portion of NGEN, the Leidos team will deliver the core backbone of the Navy‑Marine Corps Intranet, including cybersecurity services, network operations, service desk, and data transport. Ultimately Leidos will support the Navy in unifying its shore‑based networks and data management to improve capability and service while also saving significant dollars by focusing efforts under one enterprise network.
Leidos is seeking a Communications Network Engineer to support multiple sites in Yorktown, VA as one of the key members of the Field Services team. The candidate will be responsible for overall network engineering support for a broad range of programs including planning, designing, and evaluating various components of the network at Newport News Shipbuilding, VA and Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, VA.
Duties may include providing specifications for network architecture, evaluating and recommending new technologies to enhance current capabilities, and performing needs assessments. Support level duties may include monitoring, installation, modification, testing, and servicing of network equipment.
Ongoing support will require continuous technical assistance during working hours, rapid remediation during failures, and elevated services for high‑tempo and mission‑critical operations of the NAVSUP staff, including support to assigned Flag Officers and senior executives.
Location &Physical Requirements
- Must lift and carry 50 lbs. up to 100 ft at a time; lift 25 lbs. vertically using ladders.
- Work in confined spaces such as raised floors or communications closets and in noisy environments such as data centers and operations centers; stand or sit for 8 hours at a time.
- Use basic hand tools such as screwdrivers and wrenches while rack mounting active and passive equipment.
- Have normal color vision and correctable vision to 20/20 or better; possess depth perception to work safely on ladders and in confined spaces.
- Read and use digital test equipment such as OTDR (optical time‑domain reflectometer).
- Drive a personal or corporate vehicle with a valid state license to different locations for projects and troubleshooting.
- Access all necessary communication closets and configure and deploy network equipment within the Area of Responsibility.
- Change VLANs on network port configurations to support device deployment across the base.
- Split working hours daily between two sites:
Newport News Shipbuilding and Yorktown Naval Weapons Station. - Analyze and define network requirements for Newport News Shipbuilding operations.
- Define and maintain network architecture and infrastructure.
- Configure and optimize network servers, hubs, routers, and switches.
- Pull switch activity logs and generate switch capacity reports.
- Recommend upgrades or cleanup of communication closets, streamlining switch and patch panel matrixes, and perform changes such as un‑patching unused ports.
- Conduct port activation, deactivation, and logical moves on switches in support of emergent MAC moves.
- Escalate problems to SMIT Network Operations or Command Center for incidents exceeding internal capabilities.
- Install, test, maintain, and upgrade network operating systems and enforce information security/information assurance policies.
- Provide monthly activity reports on trouble calls, outages, port problems, and resolutions for NNWS NAVSUP operations.
- U.S. Citizen with DoD Secret Clearance.
- High school diploma with 5+ years of relevant experience; additional related education or certifications may be considered.
- Valid DoD 8570 IAT Level II:
Security+ or higher certification. - Must obtain and maintain a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification.
- Demonstrated expertise in IT Enterprise Operations.
- Experience with Microsoft Windows OS, version 10.
- Experience with HP Service Manager, Remedy, or similar help‑desk ticket management software.
- Basic network troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent customer service, oral and written communication skills.
