Educational Interpreter III

Summary

Leads, oversees, and facilitates communications for deaf/hard‑of‑hearing students during the school day, for academic and extracurricular activities; collaborates with school‑based administrators to monitor IEP requirements, student interpreting/transliteration services, school needs, and regulation/policy compliance; supervises, evaluates, and develops staff; monitors trends in interpretation for current methodology, tools, and resource utilization; provides skilled interpreting/transliterating services in school settings; acts as a technical resource and primary service liaison to school-based administrators, teachers, students, and staff.

Required

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
• Three (3) years of experience in interpretation or transliteration, some of which shall have been in a supervisory role.
• National certification by Registry of Interpreter for the Deaf (RID) for sign language interpreters; OR
• National certification by the Training, Evaluation, and Certification Unit (TECUnit) for cued language transliterates, OR
• National certification by Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), OR
• National National Interpreter Certification (NIC), OR
• Possess a level III of the Quality Assurance Screening awarded by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as mandated by the Virginia Department of Education.
• Knowledge of the Registry of Interpreter for the Deaf (RID) code of ethics and/or the TECUnit code of conduct.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, practices, procedures, and programs related to deaf culture.
• Familiarity with applicable regulations, legislations, and policies.
• Proficiency in the use of technology.
• Skill in assessment and evaluation of staff and/or special programs.
• Ability to apply knowledge to the needs and requirements of a public school system.
• Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with culturally diverse school‑based staff and students.
• Ability to plan and conduct professional development activities.
• Ability to maintain certification(s) and stay current with industry trends, through professional development.
• Ability to provide guidance, manage sensitive information, and maintain confidentiality, at all times.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Leads, oversees, and participates in all communications tasks required to assist deaf/hard‑of‑hearing students.
• Acts as the primary liaison to school‑based administrators for all interpreting/transliterating services delivered.
• Monitors IEP requirements, student services, and school needs to support and ensure equal access to all interpreted materials.
• Schedules and coordinates interpreting services at elementary, middle, and high school levels.
• Supervises educational interpreter I/II positions by observing performance and evaluating effectiveness.
• Researches current trends in interpretation methods, tools, and resources, to continually develop best practice processes.
• Provides guidance to staff; develops and delivers professional development.
• Participates in the interviewing process for educational interpreter I/II positions and recommends selections to the program manager.
• Mentors recently hired educational interpreter positions.
• Adheres to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)/National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Code of Professional Conduct and/or Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Guidelines for Professional Conduct, including confidentiality, conduct, and professionalism.
• Monitors compliance related to local, state, and federal regulations, policies, and mandates.
• Delivers high‑level interpretation or transliteration services for audio‑visual information in education settings such as IEP meetings, student discipline discussions, counseling sessions, and school‑based administrator meetings.
• Provides skilled interpreting/transliterating services for classroom programs, assemblies, conferences, meetings with outside agencies, or meetings that are recorded/broadcasted.
• Participates as a member of the educational team; consults with school‑based administrators and teachers to improve the delivery of interpreting services to students.
• Provides guidance to teachers, students, and staff on deaf culture and interpreting services.
• Performs related duties as required or assigned.
