Overview

Leads and participates with a crew in landscape maintenance of rights of way, green space and public buildings. Requires experience with cemetery operations, such as opening and closing graves, burial procedures, and cemetery maintenance. Inspects and maintains tools and gas-powered equipment, schedules repairs, and keeps accurate records. Proficient with general landscaping tools (mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, blowers, hand tools, Bobcats, backhoes, mini excavators, front-end loaders).

Completes daily work reports. May be required to work holidays and weekends.

Responsibilities
  • Review work orders to determine nature and location of work; load necessary materials and equipment.
  • Lead, inspect and review the work of a crew engaged in a variety of semi-skilled maintenance activities.
  • Operate equipment including lawn maintenance and snow removal equipment in support of citywide maintenance and construction activities as assigned.
  • Transport required equipment and materials to the job site; assist in loading and unloading as needed.
  • Lead leaf removal operations with appropriate equipment (e.g., vacuum truck or small equipment).
  • Lead mowing operations, including mowing, trimming, edging and debris removal at various public buildings, off-site locations and highways.
  • Set up maintenance of traffic and ensure job site safety.
  • Assist other departments in scheduled and emergency operations; perform requested work within safe operation of equipment.
  • Conduct routine minor maintenance of vehicles/equipment; keep vehicles and equipment neat, clean and orderly.
  • Conduct snow and ice removal and clear debris from assigned areas.
  • Review procedures and documentation such as vehicle manuals and maintenance manuals to ensure correct work procedures.
  • Keep records such as vehicle maintenance and gas receipts.
  • May be required to operate a truck and to supervise crew in the absence of the Crew Supervisor.
  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled and general labor tasks related to crew work; transport heavy construction equipment to designated locations.
  • Make routine repairs, maintenance and minor adjustments to equipment; report any special repairs needed.
  • Enforce safety regulations and work standards in operation of equipment.
  • Create a preventative maintenance plan with assistant supervisor; schedule maintenance and keep records.
  • Respond to emergencies outside normal workday, including snow removal duties; overtime may be required.
  • Perform related work as assigned and support other duties as needed.
Qualifications
  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Requires two years of landscape and right-of-way maintenance or closely related experience.
  • Three to five years of experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities: landscape installation and maintenance, operation and maintenance of equipment, traffic laws for equipment operation, hazards of equipment operation and safety precautions; ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to work well with others; may be required to perform snow removal; able to respond to emergencies outside the normal workday; skill in the care and operation of assigned equipment.
Licenses

and Certifications
  • Requires a valid Class B CDL with endorsements for air brakes, combination, and tank trucks and a good driving record.
  • May be required to obtain a Registered Technician certification for pesticides.
  • May require additional certifications based on assigned area.

Selected candidates with an active CDL will receive a $2,000 bonus upon hire (paid per pay period, 26 pay periods per year). Selected candidates with an active CDL learner’s permit will receive a $1,000 bonus upon hire (paid per pay period, 26 pay periods per year).
