This job is at the County’s Municipal Sanitary Landfill in Manassas. The person in this role will manage roll-off trucking operations and customer service areas. Along with other Assistant Superintendents, serves as the group responsible for the facility when the Landfill Superintendent is unavailable.
The best candidate should have an associate degree or higher, or at least five years of experience managing trucking operations and customer service. They also need a minimum of five years of direct supervisory experience.

AboutThis Role
The Assistant Solid Waste Superintendent operates mostly independently, both in the office and out in the field, under the guidance of the Landfill Superintendent. This position requires strong ethical judgment and the ability to interpret, understand, and adhere to a wide array of complex regulations and permits. The role demands a leader with keen ethical awareness and the capability to manage compliance with diverse, detailed regulatory requirements.
It also calls for knowledge of effective trucking business methods and the ability to supervise outstanding customer service operations.
Responsibilities in this role may include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with managing the daily operations of the active sanitary landfill and remote collection sites in conformance with applicable regulations, permits, engineering drawings, best practices, and established standards;
- Supervising the work performed by 20 employees, including supervisors, commercial drivers, and maintenance workers. Assigning and reviewing work and work schedules, providing training and mentoring, establishing and tracking work and safety standards, evaluating and documenting performance, writing formal evaluations, and participating in recruitment and hiring efforts;
- Coordinate the maintenance, repair, and replacement of facilities, vehicles, and equipment;
- Oversee and coordinate various contractor activities on site;
- Prepare and maintain operational and regulatory documentation and reports;
- Establish priorities and monitor work efforts, and develop and implement solutions to improve teamwork and efficiency and address operational issues;
- Routinely interact with County staff, vendors, businesses, and the general public, and respond tactfully to customer questions and concerns;
- Use computers and computer software, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 5 years of experience in construction development, site management, and customer service, including supervisory experience.
- An associate or higher degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive, full-time experience overseeing active solid waste landfilling operations or managing construction site development is preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of full-time supervisory experience that includes directing and evaluating 10 or more employees is preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of work experience dealing directly with the public in a customer service setting is preferred.
- Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Special License Requirement: A Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) Class II Waste Management Facility Operator License or the ability to obtain the license within 12 months of hire is required.
