The Chief Executive Officer serves as the organization’s chief executive and strategic leader, providing vision, direction, and oversight for all aspects of The James House. Working collaboratively with the Board of Directors, staff, community partners, funders, and stakeholders, the CEO ensures organizational excellence while advancing the agency’s mission, strengthening community relationships, and positioning The James House for continued growth and long-term sustainability.

Job DutiesLeadership and Governance
Provide visionary leadership that advances the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of The
James House.
Collaborate closely with the Board of Directors to establish organizational goals, policies,
and strategic direction.
Keep the Board informed of organizational performance, emerging issues, opportunities,
and risks.
Support Board development, committee work, and governance best practices.
Foster a culture of integrity, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Strategic Planning
Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of the agency’s strategic plan.
Identify opportunities for organizational growth, innovation, and expanded community
impact.
Monitor trends affecting victim services and recommend strategic responses.
Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, grant requirements, and
accreditation standards.
Financial Management
Develop and oversee the annual operating budget in partnership with the Finance Director
and Board of Directors.
Ensure responsible stewardship of all organizational assets and financial resources.
Monitor agency financial performance and implement sound fiscal management practices.
Present regular financial reports and recommendations to the Board.
Ensure compliance with audit requirements and financial reporting standards.
Grant Administration and Resource Development
Provide executive oversight of federal, state, local, and private grants.
Cultivate relationships with funding agencies, foundations, donors, and community
partners, including DCJS, VDSS, OVW, and other public and private funding partners.
Support fundraising initiatives and resource development activities.
Identify opportunities for diversified and sustainable funding.
Program Leadership
Ensure delivery of high-quality, trauma-informed services that meet the needs of survivors.
Monitor program effectiveness using data and outcome measures.
Promote innovation and continuous quality improvement across all programs.
Ensure services remain culturally responsive, accessible, and survivor-centered.
Human Resources
Recruit, supervise, mentor, and evaluate senior leadership staff.
Foster a workplace culture that values professionalism, inclusion, accountability, and
employee well-being.
Ensure compliance with employment laws, agency policies, and personnel practices.
Support staff development through training, coaching, succession planning, and leadership
development.
Community Relations
Serve as the primary spokesperson and public representative for The James House.
Build and maintain collaborative relationships with local governments, law enforcement,
healthcare providers, schools, businesses, civic organizations, and community leaders.
Represent the organization at public meetings, conferences, legislative events, and
community functions.
Promote public awareness of domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking, prevention, and
survivor services.
