Overview
The General Orthopedics clinic focuses on non-surgical orthopedic problems such as acute fractures, sprains, degenerative diseases, and more. Clinic staff assist the provider in maintaining a smooth clinic and patient satisfaction through collaborative teamwork. This position provides practical nursing support in the delivery of quality care for patients in a physician practice or clinic setting as directed by the physician or mid‑level practitioner.
The role complies with all federal, state, local, Carilion Clinic, and departmental policies and standards as applicable.
- Provide nursing care for patients of all ages, completing patient assessment including height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint, and current medications.
- Prepare patients for provider evaluation, including obtaining specimens, positioning for exams, listing medications, and assisting during exams and diagnostic/therapeutic procedures.
- Coordinate tele‑retinal and tele‑dermatology clinic set up.
- Administer medications and injections as directed by the provider.
- Maintain work area, exam, treatment, and X‑ray rooms and lab in a clean, safe manner; restock supplies, sterilize reusable equipment, and dispose of contaminated waste properly.
- Document and maintain patient information in the electronic medical record in a timely manner, including treatment procedures, medication refills, test results, and patient concerns.
- Contribute to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities.
- Provide patient teaching as indicated, including lab results, diet, medication instructions, and follow-up care.
- Assist with referral and pre‑authorization processes for specialists, testing, and ancillary services.
- Assist with lab procedures: collecting and preparing blood and urine specimens, labeling specimens, performing phlebotomy, peripheral sticks, throat smears, and onsite testing of waived and moderate complexity studies.
- Run daily quality control tests and maintain Q/A plans as directed by clinical/lab staff.
- Perform X‑ray procedures, prevent excessive exposure, and complete all documentation and labeling of X‑rays.
- Execute other tasks related to the operation of the practice as assigned or requested, with provided training.
- Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing or a new graduate of an approved program eligible to sit for the Virginia licensure exam.
- One (1) year of experience in a physician office (preferred).
- Current licensure as a Practical Nurse in the State of Virginia (LPN) required.
- Licensure as a Radiologic Technician Limited if performing radiology.
- Current AHA BLS‑HCP certification required.
- Ability to problem‑solve and communicate effectively with a wide variety of people.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, positive demeanor, and professional appearance and approach.
- Proficiency in automated computer systems, including electronic medical records, with keyboarding skills.
