The Spine clinic is focused on alleviating pain and reducing disability from spinal diseases using the least invasive, effective approach to treatment. Every patient is unique and is provided focused care at the highest quality. The goal is to ensure that patients with chronic pain, or neck, back or spine injuries get the care they need so they can live the life they want, without limitations or discomfort.
Responsibilities- Provide practical nursing support in the delivery of quality care for patients in a physician practice or clinic setting as directed by the physician or mid-level practitioner.
- Comply with all federal, state, local, Carilion Clinic, and departmental policies and standards as applicable.
- Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served and provide nursing care for patients of all ages.
- Complete patient assessment including height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint, current medications, etc.
- Prepare patient for provider evaluation, including obtaining specimens, positioning for exams, listing medications, and assisting during exams and diagnostic/therapeutic procedures.
- Coordinate tele-retinal and tele-dermatology clinic set up.
- Administer medications and injections as directed by the provider.
- Maintain work area, exam, treatment and x-ray rooms and lab in a clean, safe manner; restock supplies and instruments; sterilize reusable equipment as needed.
- Document and maintain patient information in the electronic medical record in a timely manner, including update treatment procedures, medication refills, test results, patient concerns, etc.
- Contribute to Carilion Clinic's performance improvement activities.
- Provide patient teaching as indicated and directed by the provider, including lab results, diet instructions, medication instructions, appropriate follow-up, and reinforcing provider instructions as needed.
- Assist with referral authorizations for specialists and pre-authorizations for testing and ancillary services.
- Assist with lab procedures: collecting urine specimens, collecting and preparing blood samples for reference lab, labeling specimens with accurate patient .
- Observe all safety precautions and standards; assure proper disposal of specimens and contaminated waste.
- Perform lab procedures as directed: phlebotomy, peripheral sticks, collecting and preparing urine specimens, throat smears; conduct lab testing onsite after appropriate training, including waived and moderate complexity studies; run daily quality control tests; adhere to quality control measures; conduct proficiency testing; maintain Q/A plan.
- Perform x-ray procedures as directed by the provider, take measures to prevent excessive exposure to patient and self, complete all documentation and labeling of x-rays.
- Perform any other tasks relating to the operation of the practice that may be assigned or requested for which training has been provided.
- Education: Graduate of accredited school of practical nursing required, or new graduate of approved program eligible to sit for the Virginia licensure exam.
- Experience: One (1) year experience in a physician office preferred.
- Licensure/Certification: Current licensure as a Practical Nurse in the State of Virginia (LPN) required. Licensure as a Radiologic Technician Limited if performing radiology.
- Current AHA BLS-HCP certification required.
- Other: Customer driven. Demonstrates a positive demeanor, good verbal and written communication skills, professional appearance and approach, ability to problem-solve and communicate with a wide variety of people effectively, skills to utilize automated computer systems including electronic medical records, and keyboarding skills required for automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
