Job Profile Summary

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP – NP, PA) delivers high‑quality medical and/or surgical patient care to patients with acute and chronic complaints in collaboration with an Attending Physician.

In this role, the APP performs diagnoses, orders and interprets tests, treats injuries or illnesses, assists with surgical procedures, counsels patients, and prescribes medication and those invasive procedures defined by the Virginia Board of Medicine. The APP works collaboratively with the medical team to provide organized, timely, cost‑effective and quality patient care within a defined departmental and state‑approved scope of practice.

Clinical & Patient Care Responsibilities

The APP demonstrates mastery of treatment and patient care of the specialty population served, coordinates care across the continuum, and initiates therapeutic interventions. Responsibilities include performing health histories and physical examinations, initiating screenings, ordering or performing diagnostic tests, providing direct patient care, assisting with surgical procedures, prescribing medication, and counseling patients. The APP initiates emergency procedures when required, follows safety and infection control protocols, makes rounds with attending physicians, supervises and coordinates the activities of patient care and support staff, documents all pertinent information in the patient’s medical record, interprets history and physicals to develop treatment plans, and incorporates physical, spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial aspects into the plan of care.

The APP also explores strategies to reduce length of stay and resource consumption, establishes priorities to meet health needs, maintains effective communication with the health‑care team, and coordinates care between primary and specialty services.

The APP serves as a consultant to other health‑care professionals, facilitating communication among staff, patients, and families. Duties include collaborating on multidisciplinary care plans for complex patients, providing patient education, offering training to residents and staff, and participating in continual assessment and revision of practices to promote team effectiveness and quality patient outcomes.

Research

The APP applies current research to develop, implement, and evaluate critical paths and standards of care. The APP contributes to the profession through research participation, publications, consultation, and educational activities, and supports clinical trials in the specialty area.

The APP incorporates clinical judgment into ethical decision making, practices ethics principles, promotes interdisciplinary collaboration to resolve dilemmas, negotiates, mediates, and compromises to assist families with ethical decisions, and respects patient rights.

The APP seeks professional growth through affiliations, collaborates with physicians and allied health professionals, assesses learning needs, implements a personal growth plan, participates in educational programs, keeps current literature, attends workshops, teaches as needed, and maintains certification requirements for VCUHS privileges.

Miscellaneous Responsibilities

The APP performs additional duties as assigned, participates in special projects supporting the mission of VCU Health, assists team members, and accepts alternate assignments with a positive attitude.

Employment Qualifications Required Education

Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant Program.

Preferred Education

Service‑specific education.

Licensure/Certification Required

Current Virginia licensure as a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant; current national certification appropriate for the role; credentialing in accordance with medical staff by‑laws; current CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS)…
