LPN Outpatient - Neurosurgery

Overview

Provides practical nursing support in the delivery of quality care for patients in a physician practice or clinic setting as directed by the physician or mid‑level practitioner. Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served and provides nursing care for patients of all ages. Completes patient assessment, prepares patients for provider evaluation, coordinates tele‑retinal and tele‑dermatology clinic set‑up, administers medications and injections, maintains a clean and safe work environment, and documents patient information in the electronic medical record.

Contributes to Carilion Clinic's performance improvement activities and provides patient teaching as directed by the provider.

• Complete patient assessments including height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint, current medications, and more.
• Prepare patients for provider evaluation, including specimen collection, positioning for exams, medication listing, and assistance during exams and diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.
• Coordinate tele‑retinal and tele‑dermatology clinic set‑up.
• Administer medications and injections as directed by the provider.
• Maintain work area, exam, treatment, and X‑ray rooms and lab in a clean, safe manner; restock supplies and instruments and sterilize reusable equipment as needed.
• Document and maintain patient information in the electronic medical record in a timely manner, including treatment procedures, medication refills, test results, patient concerns, and more.
• Assist with referral authorizations for specialists and pre‑authorizations for testing and ancillary services.
• Assist with lab procedures, including collecting urine specimens, collecting and preparing blood samples for reference lab, labeling specimens with accurate patient , and assisting with phlebotomy and other lab testing as required.
• Adhere to safety precautions and standards, ensuring proper disposal of specimens and contaminated waste.
• Perform X‑ray procedures as directed by the provider, taking measures to prevent excessive exposure to patient and self, and complete all documentation and labeling of X‑rays.
• Perform any other tasks related to the operation of the practice that may be assigned or requested for which training has been provided.

• Education: Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing required, or new graduate of an approved program eligible to sit for the Virginia licensure exam.
• Experience: One (1) year experience in a physician office preferred.
• Licensure/Certification: Current licensure as a Practical Nurse in the State of Virginia (LPN) required; licensure as a Radiologic Technician Limited if performing radiology; current AHA BLS‑HCP certification required.
• Other: Customer‑driven with a positive demeanor, good verbal and written communication skills, and a professional appearance. Ability to problem‑solve and communicate with a wide variety of people effectively. Demonstrated skills in utilizing automated computer systems, including electronic medical records, and keyboarding proficiency.
