The Oncology Advanced Practice Provider at the Woodbridge location works under general supervision and in accordance with APP standardized procedures and protocol to triage and manage oncology and hematology patients, counsel patients and families throughout diagnosis, treatment and follow‑up, perform physical examinations, and collaborate with referral providers and the care team to ensure optimal patient experience and outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct in‑depth patient interviews, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform physical examinations, and explore patient interpretations of health needs as it relates to diagnoses.
  • Ensure patient information, visit history, referrals, lab follow‑up, phone calls, and consults are carefully and completely documented in the electronic medical record.
  • Evaluate and manage urgent complaints, determine appropriate patient disposition, and escalates to hospital‑based care when necessary.
  • Evaluate infusion patients as they receive treatments, including management of infusion‑related reactions and acute treatment‑related side effects.
  • Directly perform or order appropriate diagnostic studies and interpret finished results.
  • Instruct and counsel patients and families regarding preventive care, medical issues, psychological concerns, and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
  • Write orders to increase, decrease, or change medications.
  • Identify and record pertinent patient progress, update and summarize charts, change orders when appropriate, and notify the responsible provider of changes in patient condition.
  • Educate or coach fellow staff members, including RNs and clinical technicians.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Master’s in advanced clinical practice or graduate of a post‑master’s certificate program for nurse practitioners, or American Association of Colleges of Nursing / National League for Nursing. For physician assistants, graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program and certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) upon start.
  • Licensure: Licensed Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner; if Nurse Practitioner, an RN Compact License (depending on state of primary residence) and a license or eligibility as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia; a signed “Practice Agreement” by the supervising physician(s) and a written “Scope of Practice/Protocol”; and a Drug Enforcement Administration license if prescribing controlled substances.
  • Payer Credentialing: Ability to complete the credentialing process with third‑party payors and enrollment as CMS Medicare/Medicaid payors.
