Responsibilities- Provide evidence‑based nursing care utilizing the nursing process and general nursing practices under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
- Screen for sick call and administer medications, providing first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed.
- Maintain open lines of communication with security and treatment staff, offering input and feedback to assist in organizing treatment plans.
- Record all pertinent information in the medical record and interact with other departments as required.
- Promote continued competence through education and certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12‑month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12‑month period.
This wage position offers no state benefits.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license issued by the board of nursing or a multi‑state compact license.
- Working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of practical or general nursing care.
- Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals.
- Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers’ orders in applying treatments.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care.
- Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) upon hire.
- Experience working in a corrections or law‑enforcement environment.
- Experience or related training in the delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care.
