We are seeking a compassionate, organized, and adaptable Substitute School Nurse (RN or LPN) to provide high-quality healthcare services to our students on an as-needed basis. Whether covering for a single day or a long-term leave, you will be the primary point of contact for student health, managing everything from playground scrapes to chronic condition maintenance.
The ideal candidate remains calm under pressure, communicates effectively with parents and staff, and fosters a safe, supportive environment for all students.
Key Responsibilities- Provide first aid and emergency care for injuries and sudden illnesses.
- Administer prescribed oral, inhaled, and injectable medications according to physician orders and district policy.
- Assist students with chronic conditions (e.g., Diabetes, Asthma, Seizures) and manage specialized procedures if required (e.g., G-tube feedings or glucose monitoring).
- Maintain accurate, confidential electronic and paper health records, including logs of clinic visits and treatments administered.
- Notify parents/guardians regarding student illness or injury; collaborate with school administrators to ensure safety protocols are followed.
- Evaluate students to determine if they should remain in school or be sent home, adhering to current public health guidelines and school policy.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Valid, unencumbered Virginia License as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification (BLS level preferred).
- Prior experience in pediatrics, emergency medicine, or school nursing is highly preferred.
- Strong clinical assessment skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (Microsoft Office/Google Workspace).
- Must pass a criminal background check and fingerprinting (as required by state law for school employees).
This role requires the ability to move quickly across campus, attend to students at floor level if necessary, and lift/reposition students up to 40 lbs.
