• Provide evidence‑based nursing care using the nursing process, principles, practices and techniques of general nursing care as determined by Standards of Practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
• Screen for sick calls, administer medications, and provide first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed.
• Maintain open lines of communication with security and treatment staff while providing input and feedback to assist the facility provider in organizing a treatment plan.
• Record all pertinent information into the medical record and interact with other departments as needed.
• Promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
• Work hours, days, and locations as assigned, and be available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
• Take assignments to other duties or locations as required to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the department.
• Wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12‑month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of hire date.
• Wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year; all wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12‑month period.
• This wage position offers no state benefits.

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license issued by the board of nursing or a multi‑state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX‑PN exam must be scheduled at the time of application).
• Working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of practical or general nursing care.
• Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals.
• Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers’ orders in applying treatments.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care.
• Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire.

• Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment.
• Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care.
