Bring your clinical judgment to a specialized renal nursing role where every treatment requires precision, adaptability, and meaningful collaboration across the hospital
.

Join UVA Health’s Inpatient Renal/Dialysis Unit and care for medically complex adult and pediatric patients receiving dialysis, apheresis, and continuous renal replacement therapy. This is an opportunity for an experienced RN to expand into highly specialized therapies while helping patients and families navigate critical moments with confidence, safety, and compassion.

This full-time position consists of four 10-hour shifts each week
, primarily days from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with occasional night shifts from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. as needed. The schedule includes every other weekend, either Saturday or Sunday, and three on-call shifts during each six-week scheduling period.

The Role

The Inpatient Renal/Dialysis Unit is a seven-bed procedural department that delivers dialysis and apheresis treatments to adult and pediatric patients. Care extends well beyond the unit, with nurses providing portable dialysis throughout UVA Health University Hospital and supporting patients wherever they are receiving inpatient care.

Your day will combine focused procedural nursing, independent decision-making, interdisciplinary coordination, and frequent movement among clinical settings. You will assess changing patient needs, evaluate treatment response, troubleshoot therapy concerns, and partner closely with nephrologists, bedside nurses, providers, and other clinical specialists.

This role is well suited for an experienced nurse who is clinically strong, calm under pressure, comfortable working independently, and energized by variety
. Previous experience with dialysis, CRRT, apheresis, critical care, nephrology, or pediatric care is beneficial, but the team is prepared to train nurses who bring a strong clinical foundation, adaptability, and a genuine desire to master specialized therapies. This opportunity is not open to new graduate nurses.

Key Responsibilities Include
  • Assess patients before, during, and after treatment, responding promptly to clinical changes.
  • Deliver and monitor safe, high-quality dialysis and apheresis treatments.
  • Provide portable dialysis treatments across multiple inpatient units.
  • Round on patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy, helping maintain uninterrupted therapy.
  • Build, rebuild, and troubleshoot CRRT circuits as clinical needs evolve.
  • Collaborate with nephrologists, bedside nurses, Clinical Nurse Specialists, providers, and interdisciplinary partners.
  • Support infection prevention practices, including evidence-based improvements in hemodialysis catheter maintenance and management.
  • Safely push, pull, and maneuver dialysis equipment throughout the hospital and between patient care areas.
  • Promote an exceptional experience for patients and families through clear communication, education, and compassionate care.
