Nurse Substitute

At King William County Public Schools, the substitute nurse has a profound impact on students’ lives. When a full‑time nurse is absent, we rely on skilled substitutes to fill in and carry out daily duties. The ideal candidate will have prior school nurse experience and the ability to work with primary and secondary students.

• Provides direct nursing services to students and staff in the school.
• Treats minor accidents and health emergencies; contacts emergency services and parents when necessary, performing first aid and CPR until help arrives.
• Administers daily medication, first aid, and emergency care; performs scheduled healthcare procedures per a medical provider’s order.
• Interprets a variety of documentation, files, and records (e.g., health plans, accident reports, immunization records) in compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.
• Ensures adequate clinic supplies, checks first aid equipment daily, secures and monitors medications, including controlled substances as required by law.
• Assists with public health emergency responses.
• Ensures compliance with all school laws protecting the confidentiality of medical information and with school health laws and regulations; obtains written consent from parents or guardians to share information.
• Advises administrators, teachers, and cafeteria staff about students with food allergies according to FERPA; obtains care plans and advises personnel on signs of allergies and appropriate steps, including epinephrine administration.
• Performs other related duties as required.

• A valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• CPR/AED Certification (Healthcare Provider adult and child level).
• Two years’ experience working as a Registered Nurse.
• Comprehensive knowledge of first aid, CPR, and AED operation; medication side‑effects, and health care procedures.

Reports to: Building Principal

FLSA: Exempt

The work environment includes lifting up to 30 pounds, bending, stooping, climbing stairs, and reaching overhead. Duties are normally performed in a school classroom environment but may be performed outside and on field trips. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities. The noise level is usually moderate, and employees may be exposed to blood borne pathogens.

Salary: $200 to $200 Daily
