The Toucan Ridge Ecology and Education Society, located in the Maya Mountains of Belize, offers a Tropical Agriculture Techniques Internship Program at the T.R.E.E.S Farm. The farm operates as a Farm‑to‑Table organic and regenerative agriculture demonstration, supporting wildlife conservation through research and education. Interns will assist in implementing and evaluating sustainable practices in crop production, free‑range poultry, waste management, and marketing of farm products.
InternshipResponsibilities
- Plant and maintain various tropical crop species and manage free‑range poultry operations.
- Evaluate crop treatments using objective measurements of biomass, yield, and cost/return.
- Work on Inga alley‑cropping, regenerative cropping, intercropping, organic fertilizing, and pest control practices.
- Assist with marketing strategies, reviewing budgets and profit ratios for poultry and farm products.
- Help plant, grow, and sell new products for the farm’s restaurant and mobile market.
- Participate in wildlife educational activities such as mist‑netting, observing and recording fauna, and water quality monitoring.
- Create captions and content for social media posts.
Minimum 2 weeks, recommended 4 weeks, maximum 5 weeks.
Costs and CompensationFee: $289 USD per week (includes room and board, meals Monday–Friday, full access to lab equipment, and on‑site biologist training). Lodging is in shared dormitory‑style rustic cabins. Fees exclude airport transfer, flights, travel medical insurance, and a $100 USD visitor permit for stays over 30 days. Discounts: 50 % for citizens of Latin America and the Caribbean; additional discounts for Belizeans.
Schedule35 hours per week (Monday–Friday, 6:30–12:30 am and 3:30–5:30 pm). Weekends are free; projects may spill over and be made up during the week. Supervisor coordinates weekly schedules.
RequirementsNo prior tropical agriculture experience required. Candidates can be current undergraduate or graduate students. Non‑students may also apply; preference for students enrolled in an accredited program. Experienced tropical agriculturalists and agroforestry professionals welcome; they are eligible for discounted rates.
