BENEFITS

PURPOSE

This Ameri Corps position will collect botanical, biological, and coastal data to support conservation and cultural resource management. Responsibilities include data collection, map production, proposal development, and outreach to enhance park decision‑making.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
  • Botanical Surveys and Plant Community Monitoring
    Conduct field surveys of native and invasive species in key ecological zones, map and document invasive plants, and support project proposals regarding tree‑fall impacts on cultural resources.
  • Biological Monitoring and Wildlife Observations
    Assist in amphibian, reptile, bird, and mammal surveys; support turtle mortality study outreach; operate trail cameras; enter species data into NPS wildlife databases.
  • GIS and Spatial Data Integration
    Georeference field data with GPS; generate high‑quality maps in ArcGIS Pro; contribute to ArcGIS Online web maps and long‑term monitoring datasets.
  • Shoreline Monitoring
    Conduct monthly shoreline surveys using GPS and erosion protocols; identify hydro‑geomorphic change and inform coastal adaptation planning.
  • DELIVERABLES
    • Botanical species inventory and vegetation maps for surveyed areas.
    • Updated shoreline erosion maps and monitoring site shape files.
    • Biological species inventory and mapping.
    • Final report summarizing activities with geospatial visualizations and management recommendations.
    • Geospatial data incorporated into regional and national GIS frameworks.
    • Participation in outreach activities related to natural resources.
    • Trail camera image inventory tracking wildlife and storm impacts.
    • Science communication tools such as infographics and website updates.
    QUALIFICATIONS
    • U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien.
    • High school diploma or equivalency certificate, or enrollment as an Ameri Corps participant, with commitment to obtain the diploma prior to receiving the education award.
    • Eligibility checks:
      National Service Criminal History Check and a separate government security background check.
    • Availability to serve the full 52‑week term.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Background in biology, botany, ecology, environmental science, or geography.
    • Experience with plant and wildlife identification in the southeastern U.S.
    • Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro and mobile data collection apps (Field Maps, Collector).
    • Comfort completing field projects in diverse terrain and using standard mitigation practices against insects and ticks.
    • Strong written communication skills and attention to detail.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    POSITION SETTING

    The duty station is the resource‑management office in Yorktown. Activities are primarily on Jamestown Island; the field work takes place in marshes, upland forests, and other ecological zones within the park.

    HOUSING

    Park housing is provided at no cost. Options include a single‑family home in Williamsburg or furnished space in Yorktown, with shared living areas and all necessary amenities.

    VEHICLE AND DRIVER’S LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
    • Valid driver’s license required to operate a government vehicle.
    • A personal vehicle is required.
