Duties & ResponsibilitiesThe primary objective of this position is to further the research conducted in the Department of Cellular, Molecular, and Genetic Medicine. The technician will work in the laboratory of a single faculty member to aid in the research goals of that faculty member. The general responsibilities of this entry level position include performing molecular biological and immunological experiments supporting research under the supervision of a faculty member, maintaining mouse colonies (breeding, genotyping, surgery, etc.),
and producing experimental reagents (cells, proteins, or viruses) for the laboratory as a whole.
- Perform general cell and molecular biology and biochemical laboratory techniques, such as tissue culture, Western blotting, immuno‑staining, PCR, transfection, FACS analysis, cloning, and mice handling.
- Maintain general laboratory supplies and records, order chemicals, manage mouse breeding, genotyping, and transgenic colony upkeep, record isotopic use, and follow chemical waste disposal protocols.
- Train students and others on lab techniques and procedures.
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Detail oriented, highly organized, with some experience in standard biological/chemical laboratory practices, good communication and receptive language skills, and the ability to multitask.
Demonstrated ability to work in, and foster, an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in the biosciences. Priority will be given to individuals with demonstrated experience in general cell and molecular biology and biochemical laboratory techniques, including cell culture, DNA/protein quantitation, PCR, immunoblotting, and mice handling.
Salary Range: $35,000 - $50,000
FLSA Exemption Status: Non‑Exempt
