Job SummaryWe are currently seeking a Biologist – Bioinformatics
. This position is a full-time opportunity located in the Washington, DC Metro Area. Battelle's Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNE) Business Line is seeking a skilled and motivated Biologist – Bioinformatics to support work at a client facility. The selected candidate will apply expertise in genomics and computational biology to analyze complex biological datasets and deliver actionable results in support of critical government programs.
This role requires deep technical proficiency in bioinformatics workflows, strong communication skills, and the ability to operate effectively in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
As a Biologist – Bioinformatics, the selected individual will apply advanced computational and biological expertise to support high-priority government programs. Responsibilities may include:
- Analyze genomic, metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, and/or amplicon sequencing datasets to generate meaningful scientific insights
- Apply deep expertise in bioinformatics, including genome assembly, annotation, transcriptomics, or amplicon analysis, to solve complex biological questions
- Evaluate, maintain, troubleshoot, and implement approved software updates to tools, workflows, and computational capabilities
- Support administrative tasks that ensure smooth project operations and timely delivery
- Conduct technical data reviews, analyze and interpret results, form conclusions, and produce technical correspondence, reports, and briefings
- Present findings and technical updates to internal teams, collaborators, and external partners
- Master's degree with 5+ years of relevant experience, or a PhD with 1+ years of relevant experience
- Deep expertise in bioinformatics, including genome assembly, annotation, transcriptomics, or amplicon analysis
- Demonstrated ability to reproducibly script and code using Python, R, and/or Bash/Unix shell
- Experience with data science libraries (e.g., R tidyverse, ggplot2; Python pandas, matplotlib)
- Experience installing, maintaining, and operating open-source bioinformatics or computational modeling tools
- Experience with containerized software environments (e.g., Conda, Docker, Apptainer, Singularity)
- Familiarity with next-generation sequencing platforms (e.g., Illumina, Pac Bio, Oxford Nanopore Technologies) and associated data types
- Ability to independently troubleshoot technical challenges and rapidly adopt new computational tools or pipelines
- Proven ability to work effectively in team settings
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Must be a U.S. citizen with an active Top Secret/SCI clearance with polygraph
Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $100,000 – $135,000 per year, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
